Damn You, Girl Scouts of America

Yes, my cookie order just arrived. No, I cannot eat these delicious cookies because I only worked out once last week and I cheated for like four days running. (Apparently posting about my diet/exercise success sent me into a major backslide.) I'm going to go heat up my stupid lentil soup now. And eat some string cheese. And force myself not to open the delicious cookies that I ordered and to take them home and to freeze them. Why did people invent things to eat that make us fat? Just why?

I gave my cookies to the secretaries under the condition that they gave me one cookie and no more :)

They were happy (I swear, these people live for free food, it's sad). I did my duty to the scouts. And it's over.

Oh, I'll be keeping my girl scout cookies. Life's too short to forego all of its little pleasures. I'll be saving them for a special occasion in my freezer. I won't eat them if they're in there. I think I'll wait until my mom comes to visit. But no, I will not be giving my cookies away. (And yes, I bought FOUR boxes. I'm an ass.)

Give them away? WHAT? As a former GS, I'm completely addicted to these colorful boxes of crack-laced cookie. Samoas...pure nectar.

My husband bought nine boxes. I feel shame just typing that. Fortunately, we hide the boxes in random places and forget about them so that way we get Girl Scout cookies in September. And Samoas are a gift from the gods, I agree.

Yesterday I actually scowled at an adorable group of Girl Scouts stationed outside my local market, where I was going to buy various greens for my own quit-smoking-sweet-jesus-is-that-my-ass-holy-god-that-is-my-ass diet. They, probably intuitively recognizing me as the Brownie dropout that I am, scowled back.

Someone describe these nectar of the gods cookies for those of us not fortunate enough to live in the land of plenty! Our Girl Guide biscuits in New Zealand (I've never seen them in Australia) are the plainest, most boring cookies ever. Everyone feels obliged to purchase them, but I don't know anyone who actually eats them. They are the sort you take along to school/church social events and that get left untouched and forgotten on a plate in the kitchen.

Ok, here's the thing with the girlscout cookies. They come in a variety of flavors. The ones that everybody's been talking about Samoas (renamed "caramel delites" in my area to be p.c.) are a delicious cookie made of chocolate, caramel, coconut, and I don't know... some crispy thing. They are awesome. The Tagalongs, of which Robert spoke, are a basic butter cookie, with a big hunk of peanutbutter on top, all covered in chocolate. The thin mint is a thin wafer cookie covered in chocolate that is flavored with mint. Hmmm.... I'm also a big fan of the peanutbutter sandwich cookie - peanutbutter cookie with peanutbutter inside.

I think the reason we're all losing our minds with the girl scout cookies has to do with two things:
1) You can only get them at this time of year, and it's the dead of winter, and what's nicer in the dead of winter than a cookie?
2) One cannot buy anything like many of the varieties in a store. I've found a close approximation to the tagalong and to the thin mint, but even those aren't perfect. And the Samoa? It only exists in the world of the girl scouts. God, I love Girl Scout cookies.

GS Thin Mints ... mmmmmmmmm

Has anyone tried the Thin Mint ice cream that Dreyers (Breyers? I always get them confused) puts out at cookie time? I wonder if it is as good as the cookies.

You know, when I tell others/post about diet/exercise success is exactly when I backslide too. I wonder if it's because I'm suddenly insecure I won't have the willpower to follow through or something. I feel like if I allow myself to be proud of what I'm doing I lose trust in it. Weird, eh?

Mmm, thin mints...

Freeze them. It's a nice surprise when you want something sweet and tasty.

Samoas ice cream was a definite disappointment.

Anyone who gives girl scout cookies away is EVIL.

I'm a Samoa and/or Tagalong girl. Damn. Can snarf a whole box of either in a single sitting. Two boxes of Tagalongs, really, given that there are only a couple dozen to a box.

Mmmm, Samoas and Tagalongs are my favorites too. I ordered 8 boxes of cookies this year. You've just gotten me all excited that my cookies might be waiting for me when I get to work! Woohoo!

Thank you Dr. Crazy. I can now drool along with the best of you. Those sound heavenly. And I like the emphasis on peanut butter. I wish this side of the world would cotton on to the fact you can put peanut butter in things besides sandwiches. I got addicted to all the peanut butter sweets in the States when I visited there. Mmmm... Peanut Butter Cups.

Oh, and speaking of free food (well Profgrrrrl and Cats & Dogma were), a (very unscientific) poll in our student newspaper last week showed that while 17% of polled undergraduates said they would sleep with a professor to get an A grade, 100% of polled graduate students said they would sleep with a professor for free food.

So hold onto those girl scout cookies. They might come in handy as bribes... :)
