It's a good reminder that this is not the first time it's happened. As you say, the point of this literature. I suspect you will be awesome at helping students through this stuff, as part of your general awesomeness. But I can imagine it being difficult too.
Good luck!Susanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09716705206734059708noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20099192.post-3566288655981048412008-11-11T05:40:00.000-05:002008-11-11T05:40:00.000-05:00Crazy, have you read "The Historian"? A lot of people who try to read it get stuck in the slog that comes after the first half of the book, but I got to the end and thought it all worthwhile. But I am interested in both Dracula (esp. the pseudo-historical version) and epistolary novels, so maybe that's just me . . .

So sorry about the loss of the special person in your department.Good Enough Womanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16531793545583712309noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20099192.post-65379930793707662542008-11-11T00:53:00.000-05:002008-11-11T00:53:00.000-05:00Oh yeah, and then there is the racism and mis-appr...Oh yeah, and then there is the racism and mis-appropriate on native culture throughout the series.k8https://www.blogger.com/profile/07547334819703279971noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20099192.post-2062532872515087022008-11-11T00:51:00.000-05:002008-11-11T00:51:00.000-05:00ok - just checking. Not that I don't read fluff with troubling bits too, but that series (for some reason) just makes me cringe. Must be all of the discussions about it on Child-Lit and similar lists. That, and from what I've read about her and in her interviews, I don't think I like Meyers all that well.k8https://www.blogger.com/profile/07547334819703279971noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20099192.post-34592864892744177482008-11-10T23:31:00.000-05:002008-11-10T23:31:00.000-05:00Oh, it's a totally screwed up, controlling, ridicu...Oh, it's a totally screwed up, controlling, ridiculously uncool relationship. And the post-sex stuff was.... disturbing. Where I say it's cotton candy reading, though, is just that it's garbage. It doesn't actually make me think, nor does it make me question what I think is appropriate or right or even interesting. I know I read stuff as vile as this when I was a teen (though I suppose I may just enjoy the vile stuff, or be used to it or something). But I think my resistances are why I felt like the last book was the best - at least in the last book, Bella's not this whiny weakling who did what she was told. And really, she is the most powerful of them all in the last book.

At the end of the day, though, do I think these books are "important"? No. Do I think they're even interesting? Not so much. This is what I mean by "cotton candy." So yes, parts are reprehensible, but since they are ultimately so boring? I can't think they actually matter.Dr. Crazyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12457967076373916629noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20099192.post-40946808654728381522008-11-10T23:23:00.000-05:002008-11-10T23:23:00.000-05:00Re: Twilight - You really didn't mind all of the a...Re: Twilight - You really didn't mind all of the abusive relationship aspects of it? The post-sex scene? Really? I think that's what keeps me from being able to classify those books as "cotton candy reading."k8https://www.blogger.com/profile/07547334819703279971noreply@blogger.com
